This week, we were at Low Bradfield, hiding away from the weather. I for one was glad of it, after getting chilled to the bone yesterday up on Derwent Edge; spectating on the club Margery Hill race.
Both groups had good outings. The older group went off for a lap of the woods above Agden Reservoir. The younger group had a good training outing. We took the tough climb all the way to the church at a steady pace, with some harder intervals. Then we spent a bit of time in the top fields doing some fast down hill training. After that, we returned back down to the park, played games & finished with some fast intervals.
Leaders were Mark & Lewis.
Two weekends off for half term holidays and then we return for Longshaw Pole. Although that does clash with Hoppits.

The 27th March is the day after the first Championship race of the year at Trawden. It’s also the same day as the Edale Skyline. So we’ll have a low key social outing. A jog up the hill to cheer the starting runners through on the skyline race. A kinder adventure!
Other running
Saturday the 5th of February was a busy day with Sheffield primary schools cross country and the Yorkshire secondary school cross country in the morning followed by and the Sheffield Schools Orienteering series.
Luckily the rain mainly held off for the Primary cross country at Longley park, but it was a tough course and blustery winds.
Florrie had an excellent win in the girls Y3/4 race and was a joy to watch gliding up the first hill going from about tenth place to first and then lead for the rest of the race. Oliva in the Y5/6 race, again sailed up the first hill in effortless fashion and lead for most of the course but was pipped to the post at the end and finished in second place.
There were great runs by Ben, Jack and Dejan in the Y5/Y6 race all finishing within a few places of each other yet again. Ailsa and Joe S, Joe D and Magnus all had strong runs in the Y3/4 races.
Secondary schools cross country saw some more great results with Joe C coming 8th and Tadek coming 11th.
Onto the afternoon the weather changed to the promised high winds and torrential rain for the orienteering at Norfolk Park but that didn’t stop some amazing runs by people. Beau was first Y5 overall on the white course. Jack was joint first Y5 boy on the white course (having also done cross country in the morning). Lucy W was first Y7 girl on the yellow course. Maxwell, running a harder course than for his age was first Y7 boy on the light green course. Beth S was second Y8 girl on the orange course and Lottie S first Y10 girl on the light green course.

Covid recovery
Whilst I’m no doctor, experiences that have been reported to me of Covid recovery in adults seems to suggest not trying to return to running too soon. I’ve no idea how that would translate to kids, but given they have their whole lives ahead of them, there’s every reason to wait, take it steady and if its hard work, wait a bit longer.
