20 starters, Dark Peak Races LeagueWilfrey and Howden edges are some of the most exposed places in the area as the prevailing Westerly winds often buffet the trip from Wet stones to Margery. Yesterday was severe with runners battling to stay upright and move forward .Descending to the Cut Gate path was an experience. Well done to all who set off, at the time conditions seemed reasonable and it was only after Sheepfold clough that we begun to get a sense of what was to come. The attrition rate was high but all 6 who came out did the sensible thing as anyone walking/getting slower or beginning to be affected by their efforts needed to be off the hill. Indeed Cold side seemed tough from reports as the rain had begun to get heavier.
Pete was going well to Cranberry but suffered Hypothermia and the support and help of walkers and the Ranger service did a sterling job to ensure Pete’s condition didn’t worsen.
Tom’s time, and Simon's also were remarkable as even in good conditions few go inside 2 hours.
Over the 37 years there have been many difficult conditions, resulting in shortened routes / swollen river /deep snow but this was probably the most challenging. Had the wind and rain come several hours earlier its likely I would have called a High Stones route. Thankfully everyone got back safely even if it involved long slogs along the reservoir track and the wonderful assistance of walkers and the Ranger service - Pete looked splendid in Space blankets.
