Given this was a '40 @ 40' race I had expected a good turnout but only 22 ran compared to 33 last year. However, we did have some pretty thick mist on the tops – a rare event in this race – which made for some good pertex bids from messrs Lund and Holmes to name but 2. Underfoot conditions were good.
It was difficult to comment on the unfolding race due to the poor visibility – I took the route through the woods long with Glen B and David L, David soon running off ahead; Neil and Ralph took the steps and right across the top of the wood – we never saw Dave, Neil or Ralph on the first crossing and raced alone across to Alport Trig. Dave L missed the trig going way too far North ending up on Bleaklow, deciding on a safety bearing W back to Snake Road and almost missed that. Kris G was also too far north but realising his mistake aimed SW and somehow stumbled across the trig. Meanwhile the main field were on their way to Alport Castles – well most people – Dave H lost the path and veered off left towards West End before realising his mistake. Others missed the path down past the castles and headed off towards Lockerbrook.
Neil and Ralph had pulled ahead early on with Neil eventually breaking clear of Ralph for another victory. Ralph lost time missing the drop into Oyster clough and almost lost his second place. Kim ran well to secure the 1st woman spot; Tim T 1st V50, Glen 1st V40. Fingers crossed for some more mist next year!
