Whilst running along White Edge a few weeks ago I stumbled across a pile of dressed stones, with words chiselled into them. They were clearly new but I had no idea what they were.
Peter Gorvett has come to my rescue with a lot of information:
Briefly "These poems were written by Peak District poets for Companion Stones, a project of compeers for the Derbyshire Guide Stoops. The Guide Stoops were erected in the 18th century to guide travellers across treacherous moors – each stone provided directions to the nearest market town. The stones also provide directions, but to the future, over an equally treacherous terrain."
More info and all the words here. Peter suggests that they may make an interesting run, and also ponders whether we prove the words "Vast stragnge night and moss outwits us al" wrong every Wednesday night (well most Wednesday nights anyway)?
