The Serious Warts had decided that this week’s venue was to be Strines at 5pm but, in the meantime, we were told that DPFR were reviving the Way Out West race as part of the Read more
It was a suitably dreich day for this classic bog-trot taking in the eponymous three tops of Outer Edge, Margery Hill and Pike Lowe. Six club race stalwarts were led off by Martyn Jones taking the less travelled clockwise line (PL-MH-OE), whereas the rest of the field opted for the more traditional anti-clockwise route (OE-MH-PL). The Outer Edge “direttissima” favoured by the race organiser and Simon Mills seemed to be the route of choice and they reached Outer Edge with a lead over the chasers. Proving the old adage that “It’s a poor man who can’t win his own race”, the RO seized his opportunity and opened up a decisive lead across the boggy terrain out to Margery Hill.
Ian Winterburn (the instigator of this excellent race) was on hand to welcome some wet and muddy runners back to Upper Midhope all of whom had enjoyed their outing. No records were remotely challenged in the heavy conditions.
