23 starters, Dark Peak Races LeagueA record 23 runners took full advantage of a fine sunny crisp morning with icy paths and a scattering of granular snow on the plateau to run round the Ashop Horseshoe. Basil Moss and Dalton Barham showed the six early starters two pairs of clean heels to finish well inside two hours. Best of the rest was Martyn Jones who seemed to have chosen well by running up the true left bank of the Ashop from the start. George Yates reached the finish in what would have been an outstanding time of 1 hour 46 minutes had it not emerged that he had neglected to visit Mill Hill and so DQ’d himself. The field was graced by six women runners, five of whom, in their own words “yakked all the way round”. At the sharp end of the field, Tom Saville finished 3 minutes clear of the field with Neil Northrop 1st M40 and Tom Brunt 1st M50. Later in the day, John Webber pipped Martyn for 10th place and was the 1st M60 by a country mile. Finally, Ruth Batty accompanied by Tim Rippon, recorded a time to win the women’s race. Graeme McCarthy got the date mixed up and was punished by running in trying conditions the following day.
