JOHN EDWARDS – A short remembrance
It was with great sadness that I heard of John’s death in March. He was a distinguished “character” in the Dark Peak Fell Runners as evident by the soubriquets he was given, Gentleman John, Squire Read more
Arriving at the start thinking might be the only one in attendance given the poor forecast, but was pleasantly surprised that ten ran.
Tom Westgate had opted for a 9.45 start so had just head off. It was initially very claggy around Birchin Clough. Four 9am starters set off, three doing 4 springs and Tim Hawley opting for a slightly shorter run, visiting 3.
As time ticked on towards the 9.30 start, the clag did start to clear and as the remaining five of us climbed up to the first spring we caught site of the edge and the clag lifting.
By the first spring Rob Greenwood had pulled into a 2 to 3 min lead over the rest of us who were within a couple minutes of each other. Varying routes up and along the edge were taken with us all in similar positions at spring 2. The clag pretty much lifted during this leg so visibility was good and lines easier to pick out. From Spring 2 John Boyle went up with Tom, myself and Tim R + dog opting for the traverse via Mermaids Pool. At spring 3 Tom Pape and I came together and found Tom W and John Webber quenching their thirsts.Quick hellos and we headed off. I went via Pym Chair with Tom P crossing via Crowden. It's a long leg to spring 4 from here so anything can happen. I saw Martyn Jones on the way across but never saw Tom P, luckily! You just expect people to pop out in front of you in situations like that. A fairly uneventful decent into the final spring and back to the finish.
Lots of smiling faces at the finish with just a short wait for Mick. Chatting after he said "I was running across Kinder and then I found myself in a grough and then I didn't know where the F^&k I was"! Sounds like plenty of my runs! Anyway, all happy and accounted for.
A short debrief was had at the pub with Tom P, Martyn and Rob.
Thanks to all who came.It would make a nice summer weekend social run so I'll try and find a weekend and let everyone know.
