Very hot, and I now realise why I’ve avoided this one entirely for 15 years - flat and traily, with a fair dash of tarmac thrown in. By the time I reached the one short climb and descent of any substance, Mr Beerling had me well beaten. At the front end, Messrs Frost and Cieslik were putting in strong top ten finishes, whilst toward the rear the brothers Arundale, Mackey, Bryan and Tapping were in fierce combat, with Tim - resplendent in trademark headband - taking the honours on this occasion. As one fellow competitor noted, ‘more like a cross-country race with a bump at the end’. Lots of friendly marshals, and cakes afterwards in the village hall … but it may be another fifteen years before I return.
