24 starters, 40@40 LeagueAn Impressive 24 runners took part in this 40@40 counter. Damp but unfortunately clear and cool conditions meant that no one really got lost. There was perhaps an 80/20% split favouring the Anti clock wise round, and a 50/50 split of those going via Shooting Cabin or Cut Gate. Most of these coming together approaching Outer edge.
Dave Lund set off like a train and was soon out of sight, having run the race before was an certainly an advantage, he was closely chased by Richard Hunt., The first sight of the C/W runners was Ralph, a very boggy Ralph, having taken a bit of a dip in one of the bottomless bogs. The lead three were well clear at the end but there was a close battle between 4th and 9th as positions changed frequently until the final descent from Pike Low.
On the run in to the finish and every one throwing everything they had left Sally Fawcett an International ultra runner gave chase, it only seemed fair to be a gentleman and open the gate for her….no that would be a fib, she charged passed.
Simon Mills and Rippon followed in only a few seconds back.
For me the run of the day was Vet 70 Mick Cochran in 1.31.50. and a fantastic run for Dave Lund who took 8 minutes off Tom Brunts course record….
We retired to the Mustard pot for Belgian Blue and Prizes. The Grimmer Candelabra(first) and the gold Carriage Clock(First Lady) with Apple Chutney, Rowanberry and crab Apple Jelly, rescue ale and a lovely Scarf for Fiona amongst the many prizes.
I look forward to next year where I may need to find a new trod to keep up…
