A race report by Graham:

It didn't pay off nor, if I'd thought about it, would it ever had. Recceing a previous year's race route is not such a good idea when each of the previous courses for this race had been different. In defence, there was a rumour that since the race organiser, Moz, was away on holiday, he wouldn't have had time to think of another course. This was sort of confirmed by the DPFR calendar which hinted, very lightly, that the route may be the same as last year. This had involved a blizzard, a compass loss and a snare trapped Cap'n (none of these had been marked on the map). So, having finessed the 2015 route in the daylight, there was a limited degree of confidence at the start of this year's Moz race. This was to be dashed as a new route was declared at the start of the 2016 race. Starting at Dennis Knoll (at least this was the same), there were two ponds to visit, one near Crow Chin and one near Stanage plantation. One check point was at the junction of the Stanage Edge path with the track to the Warden's hut and then there were three checkpoints near the stream leading back to Dennis Knoll. Checkpoints could be visited in any order.

Before the race and en route to Dennis Knoll, there was some stimulating discussion with TW and RS on physics, prompted by the "discovery" or prediction of the existence of another planet. By the time the waterlogged back of Stanage was being crossed in windy, clear (of mist) and cold conditions, there were moments when it felt as if we were on another planet. Occasional small and then large deviations from the optimum route near the second pond and at the path junction, possibly contributed to the not exactly ideal final race position, which was last! As usual in these sort of DPFR races there were no marshalls nor any checkpoint flags but there was literally a leading light, for all of us I hasten to add, in the stream vicinity where John D, who had a hand in course planning, shone a light in a particularly tricky bit of the course. It was a very welcome sight and was much appreciated. Refreshments were taken at the Angler's and it seemed appropriate that some of us were drinking "Explorers" ale as, alas, some of us had done a bit too much exploring that evening. Many thanks to Moz and John for the race, yet again another splendid outing.
