228 startersThe 2014 Rowbotham's Round Rotherham International Trail Event of 80 km, 50 miles with 800 m of climb through the South Yorkshire Forest. The Round Rotherham is a qualifying event for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.
There were six entries from Dark Peak this year for the annual jolly around Rotherham on Saturday. The going was soft, the weather kind and the scenery up to the usual standard. Kenny and Graeme passed us at Rother Valley, they had taken the 07.00 start, we didn’t see Neil again after the start and didn’t see John ever. It was good to hear someone else (Graeme) say they enjoy it.
For a change this year, Martin and me decided to walk the route, not run it. It was surprisingly tough to maintain the minimum speed of 4+ MPH, easier on the roads, the TPT by Blackburn meadows sewage treatment works and on the canal towpaths, not so easy on the ploughed fields near Wallingwells, Roche Abbey and Denaby Main. There are a few photos of the event on the DP photos page, showing the interesting contrast between industrial decline to rural idyllic. The fly-tipping was a very poor effort this year – definitely not up to the usual Turner Prize standard. We finished together in 11hrs 51min, Martin the first walker to finish, me the first V60 walker. Incidentally, we have both run the race before considerably slower than that!
