Well the Gauntlet has truly been thrown down this year with 3 outstanding running/drinking performances. Last year’s highest score of 247 points was surpassed by 4 people - 3 within 12 points of each other - the winner by 4 points was Austin “hic” Frost, closely followed by a “gutted” Tim Rutter who knew he beaten last year’s score by a mile but was ½ pint short of Austin. Jonny Crickmore, local student and member of drinking orienteering club SHUOC, and regular ‘Team GB’ member ran superbly to visit 6 Sportsmans including the Lodge Moor one, but unfortunately arrived 2 minutes late – perhaps he needs to drink faster?

Lots of different routes, lots of support from the pubs and their clients asking where we were going next – and I even got offered an all day bus pass to speed me on my way – unfortunately the quickest way from Burngreave to Roebuck is running. It would take a very good runner to visit all 7 pubs – 28km+ - but the variation in routes this year showed that the optimum route and drinking volumes are probably still not known.

The post race Curry – and more beer – was held in the Rajput – you need a good curry after a few pints and the Rajput doesn’t disappoint.

Great shame more of you didn’t come along – make a note to come next year. You don’t have to drink but popping into one of the pubs for a half and enjoying some banter with the locals whilst dripping sweat on the bar and trying to down a half or a pint as quick as you dare is a good laugh – except when the pint is Stones or John Smiths or very cold! Still great fun. Hope some more of you can make it next year.
