312 starters, Local LeagueAs a fitting end to Joy Benn's 14 years in charge we changed the start to a previously unused location about 10m from the cricket square. The starting lap was as fast and furious as usual and there were a number of fallers. Conditions were fairly typical; coolish, damp in places but overall very good running weather. Up front the leading men were all doing their best to lose the race with over enthusiastic starts, dodgy lines across the marshes, surprisingly poor navigation and shamefully slow flat speed. Out of all this mediocrity yours truly emerged from of the Derwent an unlikely but delighted winner. A couple of minutes back Sally Fawcett cruised in minutes ahead of the second placed lady.
Many notable performances further down the field including the Rev. Mike Gilbert on the comeback trial - some allegations of un-Christian behaviour on the first climb have yet to be verified but Matthew 20:16 springs to mind. Jane Crowson continued her good form as first local and with Julia Nolan and Claire Prosser, DPFR took the ladies team prize to add to the men's. With 312 finishers this race continues to be as popular as ever.
Next year will be a Nolan / Barnett production. Hope to have the new website up over the summer - grindelford fell race
