Thank goodness – 21 October 2026
Wednesday Warts weather this summer has generally been kind to us, so much so that comments were even made about the lack of bad weather. We had fallen into a group mood of complacency about Read more
We found ourselves on the start line for La Perloise 2012 in Perles-et-Castelet in the French Pyrenees. After a fast lap of the village, it was up steeply 350m on typical European zigzags. I settled in behind Pudsey and Bramley veteran Gary Devine (who we later found out lives in the village having moved out there a couple of years ago). The descent was fast and technical which didn't suit the local French and Spanish runners and some gaps started to open up.
Halfway and a drinks point and to my surprise a table displaying bananas, raisins, energy bars etc. Then another 350m climb up the other side of the valley - I put in some extra effort and made a small gap on Gary. Enough to keep ahead of him for the remaining 2km road and the 350m plunge on technical zigzags. Guillaume Girma took 1st place in some style.
Zanthe also came in as deuxième after battling with another Brit - Jamie Barron of Black Combe Runners.
Great atmosphere, start and finish arches, interviews, cameras, metal fenced run in, marquee, drinks, banquet - all for 86 starters! Super fun Dark Peak raiding and nice to beat P+B (in their own back yard) and 12 bottles of red between us - 6 of which we gave to Gary and his wife which might have helped to numb the pain of defeat.
