Very icy on the track from 3 Merry Lads towards the Knoll, but compensation by way of some lovely running in the woods by the dams, with a couple of inches of soft snow.

Note added by PG: GPS says it took me 9min 20 secs to do 410 metres direct across Wyming Brook from the knoll towards the pillar. It was an interesting experiment, but not recommended, even if a slighly better line could avoid fighting through holly thickets.
JF adds: On the map Needle to Tower looks logical, not so on the ground in the brambles ... and WK concurs - climb early to Rivelin Edge and you'll bear the scars to remind you of your folly for some weeks to come.
