Conditions in the valley at the start were warm, a fact that mislead many. As the first false summit of Wetherlam was approached the conditions rapidly deteriorated, and by the main ridge the snow and hail were driving into our faces* I could not see well enough to run at any speed at all, and as we approached the Old Man it felt safest to ensure that you were running with someone else.
Times were all down. Most, like me, had opted for survival, finishing was all that mattered. The field was a more manageable 271, possibly the effects of the weather and may be the size of last years field put people off.

Coniston on Fri 1st May 1987
After the brilliant weather of April, the weekend of the Coniston race brought us harshly back to reality. The clag was down to 900ft and when it cleared temporarily it was obvoius that the snow line was also 900ft. I was not feeling on the best of form (what runner ever is?), and I opted for a steady start.
