472 startersThis may only be a 'hill' race but with Hebden Bridge being located at. the confluence of a number of very steep valleys, the organisers have been able to produce enough climbing to satisfy even the most exacting purist. The real snag is the innumerable stiles and stretches of narrow path. Whether you regard this as a great frustration or a nice opportunity for a rest depends upon your level of competitiveness (or masochism?). Ed Hutt was clearly not prepared to be baulked and used his background of interval training to lead the 503 competitors out of the field. It seems his moment of glory was short lived but at least he never had to wait for anyone. I was pleased to be with Helene at the top of the final hill but lost her on the descent. What I didn't realise at the time was that she had been first lady in another, much longer, race the previous day. Don't know my own position as my name doesn't appear on the results sheet!
