36 startersA record field of 36 set off in several starts from Fairholmes Car Park. Although the wind had abated from its recent severity there was still plenty blowing to slow down those who didn't go adrift in the very poor visibility. Nearly half the field seemed to be pulled into the upper reaches of Cranberry Clough and it was a long way down if you found yourself there. On the whole, those who didn't, like Graham and Colin, appeared to be about 4 or 5 minutes down on last year.

Graham had an excellent run to catch the field from his 9:15 start and finishing second fastest on the day, ahead of Jonathon Cant and Big Bob (glad to be out of Regents Park and Hyde Parkl). Another record field of four women turned out but the record was safe; in fact the third place runners (a remarkable 3 way tie from different starts) only just edged inside it.

Dave Holmes had the loneliest trip; he set off at 9:25:30 (!) having arrived too late for the 9:15 escapade and once overtaken he went walkabout. He was not to see anyone until he passed the Watershed trio of women late in the trip. Perhaps the rumours that Dave can only see in the dark are just nasty gossip put around by nephews of Uncle Tom for, though the rain had got heavier, no headtorch was in sight.
