33 startersThis race (a Denby Dale Travellers club event) seems to attract good weather.Last time it was publicised to Dark Peak (1990) was on a March day which felt like July and this time, although cooler and breezier, the conditions were good underfoot and visibility was perfect. A pity really, for in wet conditions the direct route from the start (turn for Dunford Bridge on the Woodhead road at 141005) and Alport Trig would probably be much easier underfoot than the Watershed route to Bleaklow Stones and down the ridge, whilst offerring better opportunities for the Pertex award.
One could make arguments for half a dozen routes but noone seems to have used Bob Berzins\' winning line of 1990 and there appear to have been only two choices. On the day I reckon the Watershed route was best and accounts for me being so close behind Howard Swindells especially as I lost time against Bill Buckly et al. by sticking to the staked route from Swains Head to Bleaklow Stones. On the other hand, the winners chose the direct route. I\'m still not sure, get the map out and look for yourself and you\'ll appreciate the problems. A great event which is unlikely to settle on a best line.
