41 startersSlippery conditions made for some spectacular descents for this racing remnant of an earlier age. Hallam Chase, for those new to Sheffield traditions, is billed as the oldest fell race in the World and has been run since 1864. It also attracts one of the largest crowds for a fell race with people lining much of the route and packing the crags at the top of Den Bank. One of the highlights for a Dark Peak runner is to hear the gasps as you emerge from a narrow funnel of spectators and leap off the top of the crags without a moments hesitation.
As in all chasing starts the handicap is crucial and there were the usual grumbles before the start but Tony Trowbridge was a worthy winner with his fastest time for several years. Dark Peak had a good night and walked off with many of the prizes. In addition to Tony Mike Hayes took first V50, Andy Harmer first V45, Mike Jubb fastest overall and Martin Fox first novice.
The women are now allowed to run with the men in what was the last bastion of male athletics though results and prizes are still separate. Jenny James was the only Dark Peak entrant And seemed clear favourite on handicap but did not start... so we\'ll never know.
