Back Tor and Beyond on Wed 3rd May 1995

40 startersThe extended Back Tor race seemed well received by all who took part. 40 runners turned out on a beautiful evening. There were two checkpoints; The Back Tor trig and the Wet Stones. These could be visited in any order. The majority of people took the traditional, start up the long track to Back Tor. After that, some were tempted to avoid the drop into Sheepfold Clough and stay high. The relatively dry conditions did make this seem a reasonable option, but in retrospect those who went direct seemed to get to the Wet Stones more quickly.

After the Wet Stones there were a variety of ways back and people could be seen picking their own routes across the top of Abbey Brook and discovering the delightful deep heather around Rushy Flat and Brogging Moss. A fast line on the descent made several minutes difference.

Tim Tett and Phil Crowson followed the new trend in Dark Peak races of finishing together. Whatever happened to the spirit of competition in this club? As there were (unfortunately ) no female competitors the mens\' and the womens\' trophies were both presented to the joint winners. They were left to decide who was the real man .

There were a couple of brushes with authority which marred the evening. The gamekeeper, although quite amiable, was somewhat concerned about the disturbance to the nesting grouse. Also Ted Mangion fresh(!) from the Sheffield marathon was bringing up the rear when he had an exchange of words with a couple of blokes at the top of the track. One of them produced a gun which he waved about a bit. Should we include handguns as an item of essential kit to be carried in the future ?

Despite these incidents the race was a success. It will be held again next year with Back Tor and a different second checkpoint.
