17 startersThe 4th running of this event was held on that wonderful first day of the school holidays on a fine sunny morning. The first bike section and the run round the obvious track to Burbage bridge had the field well spread out, but the crossing of the moor is a real leveller and by the time we got back to the bikes a large group were quite close together again. Andy Moore, Dave Allen, Andy Bell and others took a bad line but Dave Lockwood and Chris Barber got it spot on. Chris dogged Dave\'s heels all the way across, suspecting correctly that he knew the way. He was then able to outsprint him on the bike ride and the final lap of the field to take the victory.
The real drama was provided by Jim who bunny hopped his bike over the concrete edge of the car park and fractured his headset, his front forks and his collar bone. He has some fine bruising as a battle scar, and a dead bike. Despite his injuries Jim completed the lap of the field and even brought in the flags. However he may be prevented from taking part in International competition for some weeks. His visit to Amsterdam some days after the race coincided with the Gay Games. Circumstances meant he was unable to take part.
There will be more of the same next year. Hopefully 1 can avoid clashing with the Fox House car boot sale, which resulted in traffic hazards near the end of the cycle stage and some loss of temper by competitors. Thanks to John Manthorpe for timekeeping; Ken and Pete for bike minding (and very considerately turning the bikes round in our absence); and Louise and Roger for traffic control.
