Ingleborough on Sat 18th Jul 1998

234 startersThe weather for this year\'s race was in sharp contrast to the blazing sunshine of previous years, the overcast conditions being most welcome. A sharp downpour just before the start sent many scurrying for cover and searching for waterproofs a typical July day in 1998! The route up (and down) Ingleborough was a quagmire of churned mud, another indication of the absence of summer.

Will Sullivan was the first Dark Peaker home, (a warm up for the Kentmere Horseshoe the following day). He was followed by Bob Toogood, who despite his improved time, could not match his 1st V50 placing of last year: 2nd V50 was still highly commendable though. Further down the field, conditions allowed for PB\'s bettered by minutes rather than seconds. The usual post race happenings involving beer and BBQ\'s ensued back at base camp, although ball games in a wet field were restricted.

I am pleased to report that all tent pegs were present and correct ( Mr Markham was elsewhere!) but even tent pegs couldn\'t help John Gunnee\'s spanking brand new tent! One minute it was up, the next... it wasn\'t\' Rumour has it that John either coughed, sneezed, belched, farted or something and down it came. They just don\'t make tents like they used to.

Still a good time was had by all, despite the weather, \"wind\" and the absence of Mr M\'s guitar, though I suspect most if not all will be back again in 1999.
