Ennerdale on Sat 6th Jun 1998

81 startersThe race saw a strong challenge for this year\'s Pertex Award from Andy Dickenson. He spent two hours on Red Pike and a further one hour getting back to Haycock finishing equal last just as the mountain rescue was about to be alerted. It was the fact that he had a map and was using it that made his claim to the trophy particularly worthy.
The race started in rain but by the time we had reached Great Bourne it was clearing with only the very tops still in cloud. However, the clag returned with a vengeance in the second half. Several interesting routes were taken over Kirk Fell, not all of them entirely linear. Crossing Windy Gap after Pillar, I had the satisfaction of hearing the crashing of scree below me as a group disappeared down to Wasdale from where a steady stream of phone calls later came asking for friends to collect them. I made up seven places here without actually seeing anyone. The clag was so thick that a runner 5m away was completely invisible and on the fast run off Scoat Fell 1 had to slow down because I couldn\'t see the ground clearly enough in front of me to let go.

Will had a good leg stretch before his Bob Graham and Roy had an accurate race but didn\'t hint at what he was going to do to me at the Saunders four weeks later.
