20 startersWe thought that there was only Roy Small with Tim Ray and Tom Westgate with myself going over to Ireland, but we then found Sally Ward with Phillip Ward were going and then discovered Shane Ohly and Simon Richardson were there. The flight over Friday was a little late but ok. The afternoon and evening went down well with a couple of Guinness. Then after a night in the YHA we found a lovely sunny day for the Saturday. The day was long and the course relatively easy to navigate in the warm sunshine, but the ground was frequently difficult. However we had a long 10 hour day and found ourselves very tired by the end of the day and as last Dark Peak team. The camp was very quiet, as I think that most had found it had been a hard day. The morning came with a heavy mist and even a few drops of rain. The course started as a mass start in each class. We soon found ourselves at the back again. They had introduced some variation in day two with the option to get 5 controls in a cluster in any order. This lead to an interesting diversity in route choice. The day was far more enjoyable as the weather improved, with better ground and fewer climbs and more significantly it was much shorter. We partially redeemed ourselves on day two coming in second Dark Peak team, still behind Shane who had maintained his creditable 4th place. We had a pleasant evening before catching the late flight home. The only problem was I didn't get home until after 1am, the morning came all too soon.

Great weekend over in the Mourne Mountains. A very tough and long first day saw Roy and Tim Ray leading Richard and Tom by 20 minutes overnight. However, the big boys pulled back on the shorter, cooler second day to beat us by 23 minutes overall. Sally and Phil Ward split the two male teams on day one but retired due to injury and time pressures on day two. At over 16.5 hours this years Mourne proved as tough as any of the big events and well worth the trip.
