36 startersThe quality of field for the race gets better every year, which meant the race organiser had to bring in the Clydesdale (over 14 stone) category and reduce the qualifying weight to try and get a prize. This tactic failed miserably as a fellow competitor took advantage of the lack of weighing scales, to add a stone (or two) to his 'claimed' racing weight.
Chris won in an appallingly quick time, despite being deprived of serious competition further than the swim, due to Rob's excesses the night before. Indeed Rob finished the race like he started it - crawling. Tony came an admirable second - his standing at the time of going to press is the only confirmed podium position, due to steward's inquiries into whether Chris's 'racing suit' gave unfair warmth/advantage in the swim, and Paul's dubious claim to qualify for the Clydesdale category.
The best tussle for a place came in the Female category, with Hilary just edging out Alison by 4 seconds in the race for some Kronenbourg. There were also some excellent (although worrying for their fathers) performances from the siblings in the ranks, with Chris Browell destined for a podium finish in about the year he is legally old enough to drink his prize.
Following what were perfect racing conditions, only the die-hard picnickers got slightly wet as we broke camp after our third swim of the day.
Be prepared for another category/discipline being introduced next year, as I desperately try to make the people that continually remind me that 'It's a poor man who can't win his own race' eat their words.
Thanks to all those that turned up, especially to Mandy & Debbie for timekeeping, and the young chap (whose name I disgracefully forgot to ask) who handed out the water at the end.
