15 startersA hot and humid day after an overnight downpour, making for a sultry atmosphere beneath the north-facing trees on Acorn Hill. The rocks at the foot of the crags were sweating water and ultra-greasy, and there was very little breeze to wick away the moisture from the toiling runners. However, the course was well-pruned and comprehensively flagged, and Tim Tett decided conditions were good enough for a crack at the Manthorpe family record, (18'42"). He got close, chalking up the second fastest time ever on the course and coming frustratingly near to the nineteen-minute barrier, but the heat was probably against him.
It was good to see the women's race contested, with both Hilary and Jo recording very impressive times for course novices.
Foot and mouth prevented us making use of a new course which would have been entirely off-road, (the new footpath through the fields is closed because dairy stock are grazing), so we kept to the old Black Lane start and finish for one more year. It will be interesting to see how the new route affects the winning time. The distance is about the same, but the path is tougher going. I think anything below twenty minutes would be very impressive indeed.
The forecast of thunder storms proved wrong, and people were able to recharge their batteries in the late evening sunshine with copious quantities of burgers and beverage. One record that definitely went this year was for the number of empties collected from the garden on Sunday morning. Thank you all for coming! (and thanks to Richard and Tim for pruning the course). - Dave Holmes
Left behind: one pair of Walsh PB trainers; one yellow "Thermos Weekender" coldbag. Any takers?
