28 startersBy the standards of the Limm the 2004 event was a stunning success. Demand for maps at the Low Bradfield start threatened to out strip supply, fortunately a number of people opted to run together so we managed to get everyone a map (note to print more copies next year). The course was designed to take advantage of the newly opened moor above Bradfield. After ensuring everyone was off I waited a few moments for any late starters before starting myself.
So after a few preliminaries through Agden I was onto the open moors. It seems that a wide variety of routes were chosen and as I climbed Emlin Ridge for the second time since we have had access I saw a few scattered contenders but not many. I had a little trouble locating New Cross (remains of)?, its much easier to find when descending. There were four of us on this route and as we progressed towards Cartledge Bents we were well separated. It was here I made my find of the day/week/year there laying on the ground in a hollow was a flint, not too big but it was well worked and will become a prize possession. I chose to take in Lost Lad and unsurprisingly I made my way alone but when I finally made my way north I began to pass a few more people who were making there way in the opposite direction. By the time I made my way up to Pike Low I was again all alone, returning via Agden and High Bradfield was a delight the sun had began to shine and the autumn colours were splendid. There was a few running figures to be seen gathering back at Low Bradfield.
There was the usual mix up in sorting out the winner but we eventually found that Tom Westgate and James Varley had 19 point each, the one point per control system works very well in rapidly establishing the results. Tom had the slightly better time. Fortunately I had brought two cans of beer along as prizes which were opened immediately. Further prizes were given to Maurice (long life milk) for being the most senior competitor and Rob received a dodgy bottle of beer for not living up to expectations (the bottle looked a bit cloudy) and Neil took the wooden snail.
At this moment it started to rain that brought on a rapid dispersal, it was a shame that we didn't have some after race facilities a little more socialising would have been appreciated but there was a need of some of us to get home for urgent food and drink. There is talk of getting a new camper van! - RH
