Moz's Birthday Run on Sun 3rd Jan 2010

Many thanks to all those hardy individuals who made the effort to turn up at a very cold Nags Head Inn at Edale in a temperature of –10 Centigrade.
The clear blue sky and surrounding mass of sheet white hills gave a magical alpine atmosphere.

Having had numerous reports of the snow conditions on the edge paths and the Kinder plateau, it was decide to drastically truncate the route. Overnight snow had added to these conditions which had made the road journey to Edale slow and hazardous. Congratulations to all those that got through. A timely reminder was seen at Fox House where a black 4x4 Range Rover had careered through the wall of the Longshaw Estate.

It was decided to leave out three checkpoints in order to be able to get back to the Nags Head before nightfall! So Druids Stone was dropped enabling a direct line to stile at the bottom of Blackden just beyond the ruin. Then directly over to the ponds, eliminating Kinder Gates and Moz’s Knoll.

Due to the heavy snow it seemed sensible to all stick to one line to save as far as possible to have to make first tracks, so everybody’s thanks go to Tim Tett for forcing the route. Although other lines may have been more effective no one had the bottle or energy to try any major variations of this line. Every step went into the snow at least a foot deep and considerably more on numerous occasions making the overall climb for the day a high unknown figure.

On ascending to Seal Edge from Blackden the whole field could be seen spread out moving at a laborious pace as the cloud slowly filled the blue sky leaving us in a thick Kinder mist on the top of the plateau. The temperature again plummeted and without the warming effect of the sun it was difficult to keep warm as it was impossible to run across here and generate much body heat.

At last the edge came in view and the sun returned signalling a traverse to cross the top end of the big deep tributary near the top of Grindsbrook and then on to the top of Grinsbrook itself. We were at last able to run again. Sunshine and deep snow all the way to the finish via the two well frozen and camouflaged ponds and a final steep descent.

Celebratory drinks were then taken in the Nags Head.
