45 startersI read last year’s report and thought most of it applied equally to this year so to save a bit of time, here’s last year’s with a few updates...
Almost certainly a record turnout with 45 runners this year and a record number of Tim’s – 5 of us. No record times this year though – still too wet and sloppy on the tops and particularly in the Woods out of Alport – although even in the dry the record requires a classy athlete to get anywhere near it and some head-to-head racing at the front – so I’ll need to drum up some support next year.
At the sharp end it was good to see a non-Vet for a change – maybe last year’s plea for some youngsters was taken up. The first crossing proved decisive for Neil taking a southerly crossing whilst Alan took a northerly route and John, John and Tim taking a direct, and arguably better, line – the end result being Neil led at the Trig and despite Alan claiming to have closed the gap at times, Neil held his clear lead to the finish.
It’s good to hear so many people commenting that it remains a good classic fell runing course. There aren’t very many that require you to be good and ascending, descending, flat fast running and heather, tussock and grough crossing, so it’s a good all-round fell runner that does well in this race and those that don’t certainly know where their weaknesses are! The descent into Oyster Clough must be one of the best in the Peak along with Crookstone.
