Minehead Running Club carry on the tradition of guessing the distance of your race before actually measuring it, hence the 17 in the title of this excellent low key race. The Seaview bit is true, although South Wales was hidden behind the drizzle on the day.
For £6 you get changing rooms with hot showers, a coach trip across Exmoor and four water stations with already halved bananas and handfuls of jelly babies. Then, at the finish, enough sandwiches and fabulous cakes to feed all of Butlins.
The race route was ideal for me, with a thousand feet more descent than climb, including both a downhill start and finish. Also, after five miles the narrow clifftop paths opened out onto the lanes and tracks on the downs, for a mixture of smooth uphills and fast sweeping downhills. The only problem I had was getting overexcited by the downhill start, which led to around fifteen of us standing in some old bloke's garden at the bottom of a cliff when we should have been on the path was at the top, 200ft above us. At least it gave us something to chat about.
I would tell the rest of you about it, but I think I should keep it for myself.
