Great Urban Fell on Wed 8th Apr 1992

The cyclists natural advantage was cancelled out by their sporting detour into the Atlas & Norfolk recreation ground, followed by an entertaining 'great escape' routine over a 9 feet high wall. They also did some elegant formation riding in an irrelevant part of Firth Park. The compact group stayed together until the final climb over Bole Hills when John Pearson's earlier 'servicing' of Colin Edwards' bike resulted in mangled gears and a puncture.

There was, likewise, nothing between the main pack of runners that pursued the hares Manthorpe and Moseley. Moral advantage was immediately established by Alan Yates with a nifty mock-Worsell at the top of School Road but thereafter the 'race' was a guided tour. There is some dispute as to whether A.Y.'s excursion along Morley Street was;
a) a severe blunder
b) a cop out
c) a major Worsell born out of frustration that backfired
d) exploration for an improved course next year.
John Manthorpe claims (d) for his inspired circumnavigation of the Flower Estate and Lower Winkobank, while only (a) can apply to a late excursion to return via South Road. Roger Baumeister did some recruiting for DPFR in Rutland Road and brought home a prize in the person of Ben Heller.

It was a glorious evening for this inaugural running of the new 'short' course. Some grand sport was enjoyed by all the competitors and by the spectators (Mr and Mrs W. H. Yates of Hinde House Lane). Thanks are due to Sam Yates for efficient time keeping and, especially, to John and Tina at the Noah's Ark for generously sponsoring the pie and peas (available every lunch time, wholesome fare, great value).
