Export resultBurbage Nuts on Sat 14th Dec 1996
27 startersThe story of this event began a week or two before the actual race when I had to dispel the rumour put round by ‘Maurice of the great colour sense’ that females did not qualify for the ‘Nuts Race\'. The evening of Friday 13th was clear and very cold and I decided that it would be safe to put nuts on Houndkirk Hill and at Stanage Pole; I reasoned that all sensible squirrels would be fast asleep. Quite early the next morning I placed nuts on Higger Tor. Finally 1 was going to deposit the nuts on the shelter at Rud Hill. I parked at the side of the road near Lady Canning Plantation and I noticed there was a piece of paper trapped under a stone on the stile. I was surprised to find a message on the paper, \'Dick, there\'s no need to go to Rud Hill the nuts are already there’. So I ignored the note and went to the checkpoint where I was surprised to find a pile of 23 coconuts!
It was a cold clear morning and twenty seven people signed up for the race which
started near the top of Porter Clough. Twenty Eight people finished the race! Unlike
recent Dark Peak events no-one got lost, just found. Congratulations to Rob Hutton who beat his winning time of last year by 8 minutes and 2 seconds. Thanks to Mike and Chris Browell for the coconuts, their source remained a mystery for several weeks, and also to Pete Dyke for recording times at the finish.
