66 startersThe 2nd 2007 Dark and White Mini-Marathon started in the middle of Macclesfield Forest, 5 miles the other side of Buxton. It took us up to Tegg’s Nose and through Wildboarclough around Shutingsloe (“The Matterhorn of the Peak”). It was a beautiful day and the scenery was spectacular; the car parks and roads in the forest were packed with cars by the time we finished. Is it always as busy as this or had the autumn colours brought them out?
The course involved a lot of climbing, but the controls were not so spread out as in the first event, so Alistair Buckley managed to get them all in the three hours with ten minutes to spare. For several other teams it was a question of which controls to skip while completing a full circuit. The out-of-bounds marking was a little confusing. Weren’t all agricultural fields out of bounds? Why were some marked on the maps as out-of-bounds and others not? It was a little too advantageous to take the odd short-cut, so we wondered if being cautious had put us at a disadvantage.
It was an enjoyable day out. I’m looking forward to the next event I can get to.
