Robin Hood on Tue 28th Jul 1998

125 startersA worthy replacement for the cancelled Baslow Carnival Race, it nearly gets to Nelson on Birchen Edge, crosses to White Edge, then joins the old Baslow route near Wellington to get back to Robin Hood via Gardom\'s Edge, thus the \"Monumental\". Three climbs like the old race, a bit of flat from Curbar Gap, but less road. Unless that is you are unlucky enough to be in the third of the field that missed the turn off below Wellington Monument and ended up in Baslow Village and a two mile run up the A619. This alternative route attracted a number of the leaders and a few club members. Apparently the marshal got lost! It seems this might be a permanent replacement.

Four wanderings and a stampede Part 4

Would the new course be as good as the old, which was my favourite race? The omens were good, the new course joined the old at the monument for the last half of the race. Tens of marshals, the local Scout Troop and the promise of a multitude of way markers made for a great race with a lot of DPFR local league points to be had. For some strange reason whereas we seem to have nearly a third of the field at Baslow, the brown yellow and purple were noticeably absent for the new version.
Sure enough after passing through a plethora of marshals, scouts, and signs, I was in the top 20 as we descended towards the monument down from Curbar Gap. Now where is that turn onto the old course? Something I was still wondering as the rocky track turned to metalled road. When the Cavendish loomed at the bottom of the road realisation dawned... but 1 can\'t be lost, Clive one of the locals from Baslow was just behind me! As about 20 of us trooped through the village, we could see the rest of the field high on the horizon.

When we eventually trudged over the finishing line and the reception committee burst into full mirth. Clive, who had been beaten by his wife (and had lost the Baslow Championship in the process), was daft enough to admit he\'d followed me, which after the previous weeks events was not the smartest race tactics I\'ve encountered.
As one wag commented in the pub afterwards, when he saw my Ripon Triathlon T shirt bearing the logo Follow me to the Black Horse in Ripon... \"and where would I end up Andrew, Harrogate?\" Still, at Stoney Middleton tomorrow it will all be different, or will it, 1 remember 3 years ago we went the wrong way there as well!
