New Chew on Sun 1st Mar 1998

We woke up to snow on the tent and those driving over the Pennines from Sheffield talked of several inches on the roads and drifts on the moors. There was quite a good Dark Peak contingent for this excellent low key event the first big event of the year in my calendar at any rate. There is a choice of long course, short course or a 31/2 hour score event. There are different courses each year but they cover similar ground above the Chew valley, over across to Black Hill, Laddow and the Crowden valleys: bleak and testing terrain, but bread and butter to most Dark Peakers.

We set off, at intervals in wet sleet, under a heavy grey cloud cover. The sleet quickly turned to snow as I climbed up out of the valley to my first control. The next hour was a hard battle against driving snow, a strong wind and poor visibility. The snow cover hid the rocks and tussocks but was too soft to support making for a long weary plough on a bearing over the moors.

As I dropped down to the fourth checkpoint the snow eased off, the wind dropped and gradually the clouds thinned. By the time I had reached the Pennine Way above Crowden the sun was shining out of a calm blue sky and the moors rolled away under a pristine white blanket. There was pure exhilaration as 1 peeled off hat, gloves and cag and felt the warm sun on my back and cool snow swirling about my ankles. While the countryside marchers swarmed around London, I revelled in the freedom to roam across this suddenly magical open landscape.

There were several trophies for Dark Peakers, most notably for Dave Tait who was the convincing winner of the short course. Dave had actually entered the long, but had been put on the short for some reason unknown! Sorry if I\'ve missed anyone: clubs aren\'t shown on the results and I may have missed some names.
