Porter Valley Plunge 1 on Wed 11th Apr 2001

26 starters
After my cock-up a fortnight ago, when I lost the maps, I was suprised that anyone appeared for the re-running of the Porter Valley Plunge. So thank you to the 26 souls and a dog* who gave me a second chance to display my cartographic prowess. Chris Barber was suitably shod this time after turning up first time around in a pair of spangly new road shoes (bad move).
The route starts in Fulwood at the corner of Forge Dam Park and winds its way down the valley to Bingham Park and then back through some allotments, a couple of tennis courts and across High Storrs School playing fields. Jim Fulton was able to perform some impressive wurzling near the school since he spent most of his youth trying to escape from the place!
Ian Smith came home first in just 35 minutes, with Bill Edwards, Phil Winskill and Mick Robinson hard on his heals. New boy John Boyle was next and was swiftly pointed at our membership secretary to sign-up. Leslie Aitchison led home the ladies, but she left before I could award her a prize. In rememberance of a certain pig farm in Heddon-on-the-Wall Ian and John were each presented with a Porkless Pie ("great for your lunchbox"). - Gavin Williams
