I'd had doubts about going so far just for a 10km race, if only we'd known! Everything about the event was superb. The setting among Black Forest villages, the manner in which the whole area embraced the race, welcoming so many nations. Huge personal support throughout the course was fantastic. Mass catering of excellent quality. And as for the awards ceremony, traditional costumes and dances, cowbell ringers, the Alpine Horn blower. No need to copy the terrific disco dancers ' "it'll do my back in" summed them up. I suspect Italy will be out to match this marvellous German effort.
