Winter Mondays Race 5 – Orrell Crook Trail

  • Date and time: Monday 27th October 2025, 6:00pm
  • Event type: Club run
  • Start point: Gate to track at foot of Locker Brook
  • Grid ref: SK172892
  • Distance: 5.4 miles
  • Climb: 1120 feet

Start at gate onto track and then footpath climbing steeply through Lockerbrook Coppice and across field to rough track at corner of Lockerbrook Heights.  Turn left past Farm/Outdoor Centre, turning south-east beside Hagg Side plantation (it’s easy for the unwary to miss this turn).  Continue along ridge track to end of plantation, then on fainter footpaths and a slightly confusing mess of gates, walls and stiles to beyond and below rocky edge of Crook Hill,  descending through grass and perhaps some bracken to a small cairn (lovely curated by Simon Dixon and others).  Please use choice of access stiles / gates indicated by purple splodges on map – do not climb random walls.  The better racing lines skirt, rather than go over the two lumps; but it’s a matter of some uncertainty as to which skirt is preferable.  From the cairn (roughly SK18508665) retrace your route halfway along Hagg Side (trying out a different Crook Hill skirt, if you wish), then descend east down rough track to and across Fairholmes road, picking up tourist footpath beside reservoir. Finish at south-east end of car park (free after 6, or possibly 6.30pm). Full route on map.

Starts from 18:00 for slower runners, to 18:30 for the whippets.  Special dispensations to set out earlier for the over 70s.

Please carry full FRA kit as a minimum, as well as a head torch and mobile phone in case of emergency and/or torch battery failure.
