Export resultBurbage Summer Sharpener 2 on Wed 22nd Jul 2015
24 startersThanks to all for turning up, and for going to such extreme lengths to make sure all the controls got used. I had four broad combinations in mind when I positioned them and assigned the points totals, but it appears I underestimated the power of the collective Dark Peak imagination.
There've been media mutterings re whether George's imagination might have been enhanced by drugs, given his exotic choices and the phenomenal distance he covered. All the more impressive when one considers that he reached control number one by aiming on a bearing for control number five. He richly deserved the bottle of Mountain Ale for MENWRO, (Most Eccentric Navigation Witnessed by the Race Organiser). A straight line version of his route appears on the Tracks page, along with Jim Fulton's meanderings around the "woods".
I envisaged controls nine and 13 as the furthest points in alternative eastern sweeps, reasoning that the chest-high bracken would put people off connecting the two in one circuit. Quite a few of you proved me wrong, braved the run between them and reaped the rewards, if acquiring shredded legs in the process. Dave Peel took this route to a bloodied and grazed victory, describing his experience afterwards as "tingling". He took more than five minutes out of Neil, who was first on the more scenic western circuit. Look forward to seeing you all for more fun in September.
