Another memorable birthday run from Edale.
In an attempt to go green, I decided to ease the strain and take the train from Dore, hence the delayed start of 10.15am. When, at 9.34am there was no sight of the 9.27 train and a phone call from John standing on Hathersage station reported seeing a sign advertising engineering works, which was not displayed at Dore, a different strategy had to be adopted. Luckily enough, I had driven to Dore Station, so it was into the wheels and collect John from Hathersage on the way. On arrival in the nick of time at 10.12, I parked up and got everybody to register only returning to the car to see a flat rear tyre!
This year the weather was kind enabling us to run the full route with excellent visibility so no excuses for navigational errors, which there did not appear to be any. Individual lines and route choices varied a bit, but that’s the beauty of the course.
At about thirty runners plus a number of other folks out on different parts of the course made it possibly the biggest turnout. There were several sub 2 hour times, showing the general calibre of the field. A great result by ‘Pocket Rocket’ (Dave Taylor) and Dave Aucott finishing in 1hr 50m, some three minutes in front of a good run by Dave Sykes. A fantastic run from Graham Berry with a very respectable 2.38.
My thanks to Willy for being a bit of a wuss on the descents, enabling me to catch him and ultimately beat him home.
Thanks for the rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ in the Nags Head afterwards. Once again thanks to everyone who turned up for the day to mark a special birthday. Long may the event continue.
