Cakes of Bread on Wed 29th Jul 1987

28 starters15 minutes before the race started, the heavens opened with torrential rain beating on the car roofs. It was good planning to put the race on at 7 p.m. for a pleasant steamy evening run followed as the rain abated. Young Tony Farnell broke the Vets record despite fairly sloppy conditions on Derwent Ridge with a spirited assault on Lost Lad, leaving the 'old goat' floundering. Later Tony relinquished the lead but was well clear of Bob Berzins who was chased home by an outstanding performer, Mark Harvey.
John Fisher, short of race outings in New Zealand, came home 8th and Tony Trowbridge kept him at bay with a sub 50 min performance. Amazingly two women appeared, Ann Watmore found the scrambling through difficult undergrowth a new experience but seemed game whilst Clare smashed the womens record.
As usual midges did everyone proud and the timekeeper was seen abandoning his post as John Edwards was rumoured to be escorting ladies around the course.
