Export resultChevy Chase on Sat 6th Jun 1987
Saving money on prises, the organisers put everyones £3.00 entry fee towards 'rent-a-c1oud'- A gale force wind, more rain (after the previous night's 1.5 inches) and poor visibility added up to the slowest race for many years. The field soon spread out into tight bunches, each seperated by long gaps. S.Murdoch and R.Brainer had over 5 minutes on three Morpeth runners at the top of Cheviot. I tried to hide among the third small group and arrived in 8th, a further 3 minutes behind. The gaps widened up Hedgehope as the wind was now on our backs. All that remained after the final checkpoint on Longlee Crags was half a mile of descent and 4 miles of road but the weather had taken its toll on many of the front runners. Murdoch won, untroubled, 7 minutes ahead but behind him it was all change as Brainer bonked (finishing 7th) and all my midweek training on Cambridgeshire roads at last came in useful.
