Export resultNew Chew on Sun 1st Mar 1992
This was my first attempt at a Chew race, but I gather it wouldn't be the same without the wind rain and clag down to 400 metres. The calendar said Category "0", the entry form said "Mountain Orienteering", the reality was a good challenging morning on Black Hill and Saddleworth Moor. There were three courses, the Long, the Not So Long and the Score, each one with one minute interval starts between 09:30 and 10:30.
The Long course required eight controls to be visited in any order. The optimum route was to set off from the start below Dove Stone Reservoir, climb up towards Chew Reservoir and do a cartoon speech-bubble shaped course around Black Hill. I decided to be different and do the first 6km up the main Oldham to Huddersfield road. It was much easier going but in my armchair later I decided that the extra 2km probably wasn't worth it. Bob Berzins had a good run, splitting the orienteers (Rob Bloor (4th) is an ex British Champion) although he could have done even better if he hadn't seriously bonked despite the 4 chewy bars and 3 Kendal mint cakes.
