Export resultMoz's Birthday Run on Sun 4th Jan 2009
36 startersThanks to the 35 runners and supporters that turned up on a cold Sunday morning in Edale to run the classic Moz's Birthday Run. In true Dark Peak fashion it was declared at the start that there were no rules and the course would follow its traditional route unless the organiser could think of a rule to enable him to win! There was still some debate as to the second checkpoint. It is not the holly bush, nor the ruin, nor the stile upstream of the ruin but the stile just downstream of the ruin. This then gives a few more line options up towards Seal stones.
Whilst observing the race from the back I took the option of a variation on the top of Kinder after leaving the groughs after the Kinder River, closely followed by Roger Slater and Richard Hopkinson (who was actually using his compass). This took in a couple of river beds and some interesting rocks and ended up at a new checkpoint of Grinslow Knoll. From here the new revised route took a steep descent down towards the Crowden river having already checked the location of the ponds. There then followed a steady traverse to Dave Lockwood before continuing the new route via the traditional ascent to the ponds. The intrepid three then joined Dave to the finish.
Although this variation proved a success for me in the MV55 category, it is unlikely to become a permanent route change as we can't always guarantee that Dave will be in the same place (or necessarily find the earlier river beds and interesting stones!) So next year the traditional route will be run again. Speaking of which there was an incredible battle at the front between Al Ward and Dave Taylor resulting in a narrow victory of two seconds by Al in an incedible record time of 1hr 36 mins. Thanks again to all who turned up and well done for some great times.
