It may not seem topical in the depths of winter but Dr Bobs views on excess hydration and the ‘sports drinks’ industry were reinforced by a study recently from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Weighing runners performing in the Mont Saint Michel Marathon they found that the fastest lost most weight. Runners finishing under 3 hours lost over 3%, 3-4 hour finishers lost 2.5% and those over 4 hours lost 2%.
His conclusion was that over drinking among runners is due to conditioning from advertising and commercially influenced sports advice.
