Same rules and format as last year, but for new entrants the nuts and bolts of the competition are explained below

A little informal competition for the Christmas and New Year period

  • Visit as many trigs as possible starting from Saturday December 17 and finishing on Sunday January 8.
  • Score points based on their height and remoteness (see scoring system below).
  • Submit your trigs to me (tom.brunt1@btinternet.com) and I’ll sort out the points. Let me know the date of your visit, and for really obscure or un-named trigs please include a grid reference. I’ll update a leader board every few days.
  • Trigs can be visited by any human-powered means.
  • Last year Dark Peakers visited a remarkable variety of trig points from the tip of Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands and pretty much everywhere in between. Trig scores ranged from minus 1 (yes, really) through to 14710 (Ben Alder since you ask). However, I have been reliably informed by last year’s winner that a higher scoring trig is out there…

Scoring system:

  • The score for each trig is the product of its height (in metres) and the minimum distance to a tarmacked public road (in km). So, for example:

Height / m

Road distance / km

Score

Blackden

590

1.69

999

Stanage High Neb

458

1.00

458

Outer Edge

419

0.35

147

  • Best (i.e. highest scoring) twelve trigs count.
  • A trig can only count once towards your total score.
  • Bonus points might be awarded at certain stages of the competition – keep an eye open for these…
