“DPFR newbie and ‘Fellrunner’ article writer Sarah Ridgeway describes here a night out with Russ, Kev and Steve on the HPM. Sarah describes Kev as ‘solid’, but I think she means it in a nice way.” – well spotted by Steve Matthews…
Rich Bradbury helps out with:- “HPM Dark Peakers not yet mentioned
16th 11:59 Team Pot Noodle included Mark Pearce and Roy Gibson
21st 12:19 Bland Leading Blind - started as all DPFR and finished with 4 entirely different members including Steve Burgess and Andy Plummer.
22nd 12:21 Lost Lads and a Lass- Philip Elliot, Dave Shepherd, Helen Elliot, Neil Drake .
24th 12:27 Follicle Deficiency and Dave- Tim Ray, Ruth Batty, David Sugden, Simon Bacsich
26th 12:57 Lucy’s Lucky Lads- Richard Hakes, Ben Robson, Willy Kitchen, Lucy Wiegand
27th 13:15 Dark Peak Curmudgeons- Jim Fulton, Dave Markham, Chris Barber, Kenny Turner
Regarding HPM history it’s a bit complicated – it did start at Yorkshire Bridge ( going clockwise) for the first few events but soon moved to Edale. The record was set in 1988 by Martin Stone and co. In 8:07. Then in 1996 the National Park and Nat Trust got involved and we had to beg to be allowed to run the proper course but only every other year. In 2002 The Rolling Stones (Simon Bourne, Alan Ward, Marcus Scotney, Richard Patton) ran the full course in the 2nd best time of 8:39. In 2004 we managed to negotiate a new route that we could do every year going via Lost Lad and Sheepfold Clough. It was also adjusted in 2005 to go via Cutthroat Bridge. Last year was a very quick year with record times for the new route in all classes. 8:48 for the men . Dark peak Ladies set the best all female time of 10:42. Nicky Spinks’ Blind Mice have now gone better still this year and lowered their own record to sub 10hrs- 9:59..
If anyone has results from 2000 and any pre-1992 it would be good to have a full set of all 36 events.
John Hunt “spotted plenty of DPFR in many different teams Friday night before the kick off. Fantastic conditions loads of snow to wander through, once past Moscar the snow really started to dominate the view and make for some great night scenes. I don’t know any results other than DPFR had one runner in the winning team and we got round in 8hours 58minutes and 45 seconds. Stephen Watts, Tom Brunt, Stephen Pyke and myself. The record for this course ( 8:07:00 ) has got to be one of the most tantalising do able long race records.”
Callum sends:- “Some more Dark Peak (in bold; feel free to correct any I missed) . Not sure about the rest of the field yet but the prelim results are here:
1st (1st Vet) 08:58:12 = Flipper’s Gang [Stephen Watts, Stephen Pyke, Tom Brunt, John Hunt]
3rd (3rd Vet) 09:37:13 = Nuns From Chinley [Ian Winterburn, Darran Holloway, Adam Perry, Mick Stenton]
4th (1st Mix) 09:59:14 = 3 Blind Mice And A Farmer’s Wife [Nicky Spinks, John Rowe, Ian Charlesworth, Nick Cable]
1st Ladies (12th) 11:35:11 = Dark Peak Ladies Accelerate [Kirsty Bryan-Jones, Rachel Horn, Julia Nolan, Alice Robson]
“The team in 7th place (Mahogany Ridge Fell Runners) was a DPFR team- Steve Mathews, Russell Beresford, Kev Saville and Sarah Ridgway (Sarah is 2nd claim with us) . I reckon this makes us the first DPFR team for the 3rd year running.”
“Team Rach, 2nd ladies team and 29th overall also had a DPFR member, Jo Armistead who was running with Rachel Findlay-Robinson, Rachell Botterill and Kate Cheesewright.”
“Great weather conditions, underfoot conditions variable, some great times posted – Loads of Dark Peakers out and about! “ – Steve Matthews.
Full results to follow, hopefully early this week.
Also, for anyone interested, JH is right about the course record getting close, although the time of 08:07 stands from when the race started (and finished) at Yorkshire Bridge, and there have been a few route changes since then… I think the record for the current route is probably 08:39, set in 2002 by the High Peak Rollerbladers, but I’d have to confirm that. The fastest ever time for the HPM is actually 06:26 by Sub 9, 2 years before their record of 08:07,
but this was due to following bad weather routes. Hopefully some more of the event history will be going up on the website before next year.”
Driving home tired? Have a look at this , Sir Ranulph Fiennes, having completed the HPM, “Team – Poles Apart – took Rucksack Trophy again – a couple of hours slower than our time of last year.”, was in a car accident in Stockport afterwards. One of the different advantages of carsharing is having passengers to keep me awake on a long drive home…
DT – please help out if you’re in one of the other teams and not got a mention…
