You might have seen some of the recent publicity
about Kinder achieving National Nature Reserve (NNR) status. All the moorland
in the Peak District has protected status, generally as a Site of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI) and NNR’s are regarded as the very best examples of
a particular landscape. Although there’s a lot of jargon here, this does remind
me that we have on our doorstep some of the most important and highly protected
land in the country, where we generally have very good access. The message
about Kinder is clear, the landowner and governing body recognise the
importance that free and open access will continue. However it does appear that
this protected status will not extend to the grouse population and shooting
will continue as before. More information on this complex issue is
