Just a reminder about Route Notes. They exist for most races, so if there’s anything anyone needs to know about a race, please get in touch. Someone will be able to help. Lots of classic races looming up, Brecon Beacons, Sedbergh, Grisedale Horseshoe, Peris, Exterminator, Three Shires, etc, etc
Ricky’s Race:- Indeed a sneaky trip to the dentist at Eckington, and wot a supprise, there’s a race on the same night. Good to meet up with regular friends and places. The results may eventually appear on their website. A pity about the late start, everyone seemed to just wait around for a wasted 15 mins. The last hill needed to be much, much longer? That marked pond on the map, on the left as we entered the woods, has a most impressive scarred overhand above it, I’d not known of that?
DPFR Alport –
Sierre – Zinal results I’ve not sifted through them – anyone there?
Brassington Wakes:- A while back, but thanks to Stuart Learmouth for this, and worth noting for next year?
30th July 2009 approx. 4.5 miles 500ft
“The second running of the Brassington Fell Race was a low key but welcome addition to the race calendar in these parts. Dark Peak’s Dave Harrison knew his course record looked under threat as he was still recovering from his recent BG success. And a new record looked certain when local fast man Ray Foley turned up, although it could have ended differently if a very sporting Dave had not called Ray back from a wrong turn. Joan’s trip over from Sheffield proved fruitful and my own 13th place ‘first senior’ must be a record (but not one to be proud of).
Summer Series (10) – Hukling Howler. Next race is Aug 24th, from Fairholmes – Gusset Race.
Sedbergh (23rd August, a week later than shown in the Calendar). As good as they come, with September AL races coming along, worth the trip. Greg asks if anyone is going gregrimmer@tiscali.co.uk
Great West Fell Race AS fell race on Dartmoor (5m & 1360ft) Nick Kirk “was on holiday in the area, good fell race similar to running on Kinder. Worthwhile fell race if in the area.3rd and 1st Vet”
DT – do I see the traditional “What a surprise, there’s a fell race on nearby” approach to holiday planning?
Dark and White – Bradwell – results. Jon indeed enlightens us lesser mortals.. “Rich Patton did a great job organising a fantastic tour of the Dark and White Peak in his 31, or 33 mile race. A pleasure to do such a great race in perfect weather, starting and finishing 100 metres from my front door. As part of the Run Further series it attracted a a fair size field of about 100 runners. It was a mellow start to Hope Cement Works, up Pindale, then down Cavedale. Hollins Cross felt a bit harder, then the biggest climb as for the Skyline out of Edale, then to the Druids stone. The drop to the Youth Hostel was pretty unpleasant, then easier ground up to Back Tor, Lose Hill and Hope for a water station. I was in luck with my 3 kids handing out jelly babies at the road crossings! Then up through Aston, over the shoulder of WIn Hill, to the dam wall of Ladybower. It certainly felt hot and hard going up the long road and then Roman Road to Stanage, with a sneaky checkpoint that most of us missed and doubled back for. Then it was fantastic long drop from Burbage bridge, past Toad’s Mouth, top of Padley, then down the incline plane and up the river to the Plough. By this stage I was running with Allen Smalls, who is in the GB ultra team having won 2 of the Ultras in the Run Further series this year,, with others a little way back. He didn’t seem to be trying too hard, but I was struggling to join in with his relaxed conversation. The pace got harder from Abney, and by the time we were legging down the main street of Bradwell it all seemed too ridiculous to have a sprint finish after 5 1/2 hours. So thank goodness he didn’t know I am the worlds worst sprinter, and he agreed to my suggestion of coming in together! Nothing in time or distance compared to any of the big rounds that half the club seem to have done, but the furthest distance I have run in a day and I was glad to stop!”
Teggs Nose – results
Those extra excellent, no fuss, internal races have rather lapsed, a long way now from Otley to the Odin Mine – but pleased that Andy Jenkins is opening out with:-
